CEDAR CITY — The Iron County Sheriff's Office reported this week that it had recovered the skeletal remains of a human body in a rural area Wednesday.
The office was dispatched about 2 p.m. Wednesday after the remains were discovered by a Bureau of Land Management crew doing trail maintenance in the Shurtz Canyon area, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. Deputies used ATVs to reach the scene and confirmed that the remains were of a person.
The bones were "found on an outcropping of rocks," the release says, and it appeared they had been there "for a long time."
There was very little clothing found with the remains, the office wrote, and because of how long they'd been there deputies were unable to determine immediately if the remains belong to a man or woman. They've been sent to the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
"More information will be provided pending further investigation," the sheriff's office said.
