SALT LAKE CITY — Two men face drug distribution charges after police say they found 21 pounds of meth in a hidden compartment in their vehicle.
Philip Melvin Boyce, 33 of Blue Mesa, California, and Joshua Blake Sherwood, 30, of Phelan, California, were charged in 2nd District Court on Sept. 10 with drug possession with intent to distribute, a second-degree felony; altering a vehicle compartment for contraband, a class A misdemeanor; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.
According to a newly released search warrant affidavit, Davis County sheriff’s deputies recently learned that the two men may be transporting 40 pounds of meth through their jurisdiction. On Sept. 2, deputies spotted their SUV with California license plates traveling on I-15 and pulled it over for speeding and improper lane travel near Farmington, according to charging documents.
A police K-9 was called to the scene and indicated the presence of drugs in the vehicle, the charges state.
In a hidden compartment in the back seat, deputies found 21 pounds of meth, according to court documents. The warrant states the compartment was “controlled with aftermarket wiring and a toggle switch.”
Boyce told investigators he knew about the hidden compartment “but did not admit to knowing of the large amount of meth found inside,” the charges state.
