SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a convenience store clerk they say tried to stop a robbery suspect by hitting him with his car.
Tuesday morning, Ronald James Kirkham, 60, was working at a Salt Lake City 7-Eleven when he ran after an alleged shoplifter, according to a police affidavit. Kirkham got into his car and followed the suspect and then attempted to detain him for police, the affidavit states.
“During this process, (Kirkham) struck the retail theft suspect with his vehicle, driving over his legs, and then proceeded to crash the vehicle into the neighboring home, causing severe structural damage,” according to the affidavit.
Kirkham left the crash scene and called 911. He was later arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, failing to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury and leaving the scene of a crash.
An updated condition of the man hit by the car was not immediately available.
