S.L. School District’s supply of educational devices depleted; 6,000 Chromebooks backordered amid supply chain pinch

The Salt Lake City School District informed parents Wednesday that its supply of student laptops has been depleted.The district is at crunch time with the school year scheduled to start on Tuesday. And Salt Lake City is the only school district in Utah to start the school year solely in remote mode.

Salt Lake City moving to yellow COVID-19 restriction level, mayor says

Salt Lake City will move to the yellow COVID-19 restriction level starting Friday, Mayor Erin Mendenhall confirmed.Mendenhall initially said the change would take place Thursday but later altered the timeline.While most of Utah has already been in the yellow level for several weeks, Salt Lake City remained at the more restrictive orange level due to the prevalence of COVID-19 cases in the city.However, there have now been over 30 days of downward-trending COVID-19 data in the city, Mendenhall said in a tweet Wednesday.Additionally, the 84104 and 84116 ZIP codes in the city, which have been the most-impacted areas, have seen stabilization or reduction in cases, she said."While this is good news, now is not the time to ease up on being responsible, wearing masks in public spaces, and keeping six feet of distance between you and others," Mendenhall tweeted.

Hurricane liquor store closed due to employee's positive COVID-19 test

The state liquor and wine store in Hurricane has been closed due to an employee's positive COVID-19 test, Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control officials confirmed Wednesday. The store, at 202 N. Foothills Canyon Drive in Hurricane, has been closed until further notice, the DABC said. The agency is working with the Washington County Health Department to determine if there were any other employees exposed to the disease. The Utah Department of Facilities and Construction Management has been contacted to completely disinfect and sanitize the store. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

419 more COVID-19 cases, 1 death reported in Utah Wednesday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 419 from Tuesday, with one more death reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 376, according to the health department. Steroids confirmed to help severely ill coronavirus patients

New studies confirm that multiple types of steroids improve survival for severely ill COVID-19 patients, cementing the cheap drugs as a standard of care.An analysis of pooled results from seven studies, led by the World Health Organization and published Wednesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that steroids reduced the risk of death in the first month by about one-third compared to placebo treatment or usual care alone in these seriously ill patients who needed extra oxygen.— Associated Press

Nearly 10% of Utah restaurants have closed for good, association says

The coronavirus pandemic has harmed many segments of the Utah economy, but few more than the food and beverage industry. And industry leaders are beginning to recognize the scope of the damage.Utah Restaurant Association president and CEO Melva Sine told KSL.com at least 452 Utah restaurants — nearly 10% of the state's total number — have closed permanently due to the pandemic.— Graham Dudley, KSL.com

SLC haunted house prepares to open during pandemic

The owner of Nightmare on 13th says this actually might not be the most complicated time to run a haunted house. “We opened 10 days after 9/11. That was very … interesting,” said Mike Hendrie, who has operated the Salt Lake City attraction for 30 years. Nightmare on 13th will open two Fridays from now, on Sept. 11, amidst a gamut of the now-usual regulations. Customers and staff must wear masks, tickets will be staggered through a timing system every 30 minutes, and groups stay at least 6 feet away from each other.—Todd Fooks, KSL NewsRadio

Many people, including pet lovers, are experiencing homelessness for the first time because of the pandemic. Most homeless shelters don’t allow pets, so what happens to these beloved dogs and cats? Man says convalescent plasma saved his life

A man who spent six weeks in the hospital and more than three weeks on a ventilator with COVID-19 said convalescent plasma saved his life.Ray Leazenby, 60, of Orange County, California, was discharged from Utah Valley Hospital in Provo Tuesday.His family said just weeks earlier it was in question whether Leazenby would survive the novel coronavirus.“(There were) lots of prayers and lots of faith, but it was the plasma — and it is a miracle,” wife Debra said. “I watched it with my own eyes.”—Andrew Adams, KSL TV

Large antibody study offers hope for virus vaccine efforts

Antibodies that people make to fight the new coronavirus last for at least four months after diagnosis and do not fade quickly as some earlier reports suggested, scientists have found.Tuesday’s report, from tests on more than 30,000 people in Iceland, is the most extensive work yet on the immune system’s response to the virus over time, and is good news for efforts to develop vaccines.—Associated Press
