CDC report found 94% of COVID-19 deaths included comorbid factors. Here’s what that means

The internet was abuzz over the weekend when an updated report from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention noted that 94% of COVID-19 fatalities from Feb. 1 through Aug. 22 included some comorbid factors.What do these figures actually tell us about COVID-19 deaths?The short answer is the data essentially affirms what was believed early on, but it also expands on it. The data tells us that people with pre-existing conditions are more likely to have severe effects or die, said Dr. Todd Vento, an infectious disease physician for Intermountain Healthcare. Salt Lake City mayor unveils plans to handle COVID-19 issues, homelessness in coming months

Even though winter is still a few months away, how Salt Lake City manages COVID-19 and the effects of the coronavirus took center stage during a city council work session Tuesday afternoon.That not only includes ensuring a vaccination plan is in place for the day a COVID-19 vaccine is available, but how to handle economic, housing and equity issues, as well. How leaders also plan to handle a “visible increase” of homelessness in the age of a pandemic — especially as the need for shelter use creeps up — led to a lengthy discussion among city leaders at a city council work session Tuesday afternoon. In fact, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said officials will begin resuming homeless camp abatements in the city next week.The mayor unveiled her COVID-19 winter plan through a 15-minute prepared video. In it, she tackled not just aspects of the coronavirus itself, but also how the pandemic is currently and expected to continue affecting life.“We focused our planning on five key areas that address the challenges COVID will create for our residents this winter: health, education and childcare, economic support, housing stability and homeless services, and operations and service from the city,” she said in the video.— Carter Williams, KSL.com

CDC directs halt to renter evictions to prevent virus spread

The Trump administration has issued a directive halting the eviction of certain renters through the end of 2020 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.Federal, state and local governments have approved eviction moratoriums during the course of the pandemic for many renters, but those protections are expiring rapidly. A recent report from one think tank, the Aspen Institute, stated that more than 20 million renters live in households that have suffered COVID-19-related job loss and concluded that millions more are at risk of eviction in the next several months.— Associated Press

American Preparatory Academy closes Draper campus due to COVID-19 cases

American Preparatory Academy's Draper 1 campus has moved to at-home learning until further notice after 15 cases of COVID-19 were discovered at the school.School started at the campus on August 19 with about 45% of students learning from home, according to an emailed statement from American Prep Executive Director Carolyn Sharette.Tuesday, the school pivoted to having all students attend school from home due to the 15th COVID-19 case, Sharette said. No end date for the at-home schooling has been determined, she added."We always seek to do what’s best for students, families and our staff and we feel this brief pause in on-campus learning is best for our families," Sharette said. 296 more COVID-19 cases, 2 deaths reported in Utah Tuesday

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 296 from Monday, with two more deaths reported, ending the state's three-day streak without deaths from the disease, according to the Utah Department of Health.The state now estimates there are 7,656 active cases of the disease in Utah. The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 374, according to the health department. The next challenge for BYU's unique football season: a new approach to campus life

BYU began classes Monday unlike any other. And though the Cougars' football program is one of the only teams west of Texas still planning to play in the fall of 2020 — the only one in Utah, and only one west of the Rocky Mountains, in fact — the stark contrast of that more-empty parking lot was a signal that this season will be unlike any other.In an offseason that was anything but normal, with the cancellation of most of spring football, the spring athletic season, and an alteration of most summer workouts, as well, BYU players and coaches — let alone every other student that reported to campus in a fall semester that will feature a hybrid of in-person and online learning — were just excited for the sense of normalcy that came with two words Monday: game week.—Sean Walker, KSL.com

RootsTech 2021 will be an online-only conference

RootsTech, the annual family history conference held in Salt Lake City, will move online in 2021, FamilySearch announced Tuesday.The 2021 conference, which will run from Feb. 25-27, will be solely a virtual event due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. RootsTech was originally scheduled for Feb. 3-6 at the Salt Palace Convention Center."The pandemic is giving us the opportunity to bring RootsTech to a broader audience worldwide," FamilySearch International CEO Steve Rockwood said in a statement. Delta, American join United in dropping most US change fees

This could be the final boarding call for the $200 ticket-change fee that has enraged so many U.S. airline travelers over the past decade.Delta Air Lines and American Airlines said Monday that they are dropping the fee on most tickets for domestic flights, copying United Airlines’ move one day earlier.Southwest Airlines didn’t levy change fees to start with, so Monday's announcements mean that the four biggest U.S. carriers will have roughly similar policies.Airlines are being battered by the coronavirus pandemic, as travel restrictions and fear of contracting the virus are keeping travelers at home.— Associated Press

U. pulmonologist: Wildfire smoke could increase risk for COVID-19

As wildfires across the west fill the air with smoke, doctors are warning that particulate pollution could make Utahns more susceptible to COVID-19 infection.Dr. Cheryl Perozzi, a pulmonologist at the University of Utah Medical Center, said that’s one more reason to be vigilant about avoiding the virus."Both COVID-19 and wildfire smoke are public health threats. Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 253 on Monday, with no new deaths reported for the third day in a row, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Alpine School District officials said Monday that 41 students and 26 employees from the 91 schools and six general district office facilities tested positive for COVID-19.
