SALT LAKE CITY — A Texas man has been accused of sexually abusing children at a Utah home day care nearly 20 years ago.

Darrin Pons, 41, of Austin, Texas, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with rape of a child and five counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies.

Pons’ mother ran a day care out of her home in Sandy from 1982 to 2007, according to charging documents.

“While at the day care, Pons would be left alone with the children. Pons disclosed that he sexually touched several children at the day care when he was between 12 and 16 years old,” the charges state.

Pons would be in charge of watching the children while his mother ran errands, according to the charges.

The alleged abuse happened between 1990 and 1994, the charges.

A $100,000 warrant was issued Thursday for Pons’ arrest.
