SOUTH SALT LAKE — A Utah Transit Authority officer was injured Tuesday night in an auto-pedestrian crash, police said.

A little before 10 p.m. near 2700 S. State Street, a UTA officer was responding to a dog in the roadway, South Salt Lake police spokeswoman Danielle Croyle said.

Witness Mark Pando told KSL TV a dog that was not on a leash was walking with its owner when it went into the road.

The UTA officer stopped her vehicle in the roadway with emergency lights on to approach the dog when an oncoming vehicle struck her, Croyle said.

The officer was transported via ambulance to an area hospital in critical condition and was in stable condition Wednesday morning.

The driver cooperated with police and was not arrested, although police had said earlier Wednesday that the driver was arrested.

Northbound lanes on State Street were shut down at 2700 South and one southbound lane was closed as well, as police investigated the crash, but they have since reopened.
