Lightning-caused Strawberry Fire mapped at 43 acres

The Strawberry Fire, which began burning in Kane County on Monday, was caused by lightning, fire officials confirmed. The fire, which was estimated to be about 70 acres earlier in the day, had been officially mapped at 43 acres by 10:40 p.m. The fire was 0% contained as of Monday night but fire crews expected to gain some containment on Tuesday.

Dennis Hill Fire 3,000 acres; 0% contained

The Dennis HIll Fire, which started burning near Park Valley earlier Monday, had grown to an estimated 3,000 acres by 9 p.m. and was 0% containedThe fire was initially estimated at 700 acres around 3:25 p.m.Strong winds continued to drive the fire’s growth but bulldozers had made progress toward establishing a line around the blaze’s perimeter, fire officials said.The fire’s cause is under investigation.

Firefighters gain 100% containment on 2 more wildfires

Firefighters gained containment of two more wildfires on Monday night and another was nearly contained as well, state and federal officials confirmed.The Veyo West Fire, which began July 13 near Veyo, had reached 90% containment as of Monday night.The Three Hill Fire, which started in Hyde Park Canyon on Friday, had reached 100% containment.The 11,700-acre Turkey Farm Road Fire, which began last week in Washington County, had reached 100% containment.

Firefighters making progress on Strawberry Fire burning in Kane County

On Monday evening, firefighters had made good progress on the perimeter of the Strawberry Fire, which was started about 2 p.m.The fire was estimated to be 70 acres and its cause was unknown as of Monday evening.Authorities with the Kane County’s Sheriff’s Office said some campers had been evacuated in the fire.  No other structures were threatened in the blaze and further evacuations were not anticipated, officials confirmed. Sheriff’s officials added that fire crews were confident the fire would be controlled Monday night. As of Monday evening, the timber-fueled blaze was 0% contained.Four helicopters, two single-engine air tankers, two large air tankers, three hand crews, eight fire engines, two bull dozers and one water tender were all being used to fight the fire.

High fire danger prompts BLM to enact restrictions in 11 Utah counties

High winds and dry vegetation have prompted the Bureau of Land Management Salt Lake Field Office to enact restrictions in 11 counties in northern Utah.The restrictions impact BLM-managed lands in Salt Lake, Utah, Tooele, Box Elder, Cache, Rich, Weber, Morgan, Davis, Summit and Wasatch counties.“This year, the BLM West Desert District has seen a 30% increase in human-caused fires and over 60,000 acres of BLM-managed lands have already burned,” said BLM West Desert District Fire Management Officer Geoff Wallin. “We are seeing fuels at critical dryness and fire behavior that spreads very quickly, which can threaten the public and our firefighters. We urge the public to take notice of fire officials’ warnings and adhere to fire restrictions to help prevent large, catastrophic human-caused fires.”The Fire Prevention Order prohibits the following acts:

Use of any steel core, jacketed, and tipped ammunition of any caliber between June 15 and Sept. 30 each year.

Campfires, except within agency provided fire grates at developed campgrounds, or within fully enclosed stoves, grills, or in stoves using pressurized liquid or gas.

Smoking cigarettes, except within an enclosed vehicle, building, developed recreation site or while stopped in a cleared area of at least 3 feet in diameter that is barren and cleared of all flammable material.

Grinding, cutting, and welding of metal.

Operating a chainsaw, or other internal combustion engine without a properly installed USDA or Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) approved spark arresting device, a 5-pound fire extinguisher and a shovel.

Use of any tracer or incendiary ammunition of any caliber.

Possession or use of any kind of explosives, incendiary or chemical devices, pyrotechnics or fireworks, or exploding targets.

Use of any sky lanterns, paper lanterns, fire balloons, acetylene balloons or similar devices.

Use of any off-road vehicle (ORV) that is not equipped with a properly installed and maintained spark arrestor. Spark arresters shall meet the 80% efficiency level standard when determined by the appropriate SAE recommended practices J335 and J350.

These restrictions are the same that went into effect on July 13 in Juab and Millard counties. Active fire restrictions are available to view on utahfireinfo.gov.BLM recommends the following for visitors to public lands:

Completely extinguish campfires

Dispose of cigarettes properly

Stay on established roads and trails to avoid dry brush and grass

Choose target shooting backstops free of rocks and vegetation

Ensure trailer chains do not drag or create sparks

Cottonwood Trail fire 50% contained

The fast-moving Cottonwood Trail Fire in Washington County is at 50% containment, according to state fire officials.Nine engines and 107 personnel are still working on the fire Monday afternoon. The fire is mapped at 1,631 acres. All evacuations in the area have been lifted.One firefighter was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation on Sunday but no injuries were reported Monday.— Tracie Snowder, KSL.com

Big Hollow Fire at 95% containment; 33 fires in Utah over the weekend

The Big Hollow Fire is at 95% containment, according to state and federal fire officials. It was last reported to be at 438 acres.

33 wildfires started in Utah over the weekend of July 17, and most of them were human-caused.

New fire reported in Kane County, 70 acres burned

A new fire was reported in Bowers Flat, north of Mammoth Creek in Kane County.The Strawberry Fire is estimated to be at 70 acres. No structures are threatened at this time.The cause of the fire is unknown.

Dennis Hill Fire sparks near Park Valley, already at 700 acres

A new fire sparked near Park Valley in Box Elder County, state and federal officials reported on Twitter.

The fire was first reported to be 300 acres but has quickly spread to 700 acres. Air and ground crews are working to suppress the flames.— Tracie Snowder, KSL.com

Big Hollow Fire in Wasatch County 85% contained

The Big Hollow Fire in Wasatch County is now 85% contained, Wasatch County Fire officials said Monday. One firefighting crew and an engine are still monitoring the fire until it reaches 100% containment, officials said.

Cottonwood Trail Fire in Washington County now 35% contained

The Cottonwood Trail Fire, burning near Leeds in Washington County, is now 35% contained.Fire officials previously said the fire had burned 3,000 acres, but the blaze was mapped at 1,631 acres on Monday morning.

Evacuations lifted for Cottonwood Trail Fire in Washington County

Evacuations have been lifted as of 8 a.m. Monday for the Cottonwood Trail Fire, burning near Leeds in Washington County, state and federal fire officials reported through Utah Fire Info.People are asked to drive with caution near the fire area because fire crews will be working the blaze Monday. Local traffic only will be allowed in the Angel Heights area, officials said.The fire was mapped Sunday evening at 3,000 acres and was 10% contained.

Evacuations remain in effect near Cottonwood Trail Fire in Washington County

Evacuations remain in effect Monday morning for residents west of I-15 in Leeds due to the Cottonwood Trail Fire.The evacuation area includes the Angel Heights subdivision. The Silver Reef subdivision was also threatened.The fast-moving fire began when a vehicle's tire blew out on I-15 Sunday. It had burned an estimated 3,000 acres and was 10% contained.
