PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Unincorporated residents in Utah County will likely have to pay more in property taxes next year.
County Commissioner Steve White says raising property taxes will cover the cost of providing police service in the unincorporated areas of the county, like Provo Canyon.
The increase comes as money generated from new building permits is down by 50 percent. Also, the state required the county to pay back more than $500,000 in telecommunications sales taxes collected over three years that was supposed to go to cities.
Utah County Sheriff Jim Tracy says he's eliminated 13 administrative positions in his department and is holding off on buying new vehicles. He says a tax increase would keep him from eliminating up to seven more people.
