(KSL News) Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. is unveiling a new Utah Scholars initiative today.
The purpose of the initiative is to get eighth graders to start preparing now for college and the workplace.
In the past, business executives have criticized Utah public schools for letting students graduate that have few basic writing and math skills.
The U.S. Department of Education is funding the initiative by giving a $300-thousand grant. Students will be asked to sign their name and commit to taking four years of high school English and math, and three and a half years of social studies.
