(KSL News) A man was arrested after struggle and shooting involving Tooele County sheriff's deputies.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, two deputies responded to a call of an armed and suicidal man in the Johnson's Pass area on State Road 199, near mile marker 12.

The deputies located the man inside a white Chevy Yukon parked about 200 yards off the highway.

The deputies approached the vehicle and found 35-year-old Wayne Gould from Dugway in the driver's seat with a shotgun between his knees.

When Gould saw Deputy Aaron Bird, he yelled for the deputy to leave and put the shotgun in his mouth. Deputy Bird moved away from the vehicle and told Gould to calm down. When Gould pulled the gun from his mouth the deputy grabbed the barrel and the two began to struggle and the gun went off.

The other deputy was at the rear of the vehicle on the driver's side. When she heard the gunshot and saw her colleague step back, she assumed he had been hit.

Deputy Shandy Lewis then fired one round into the vehicle toward Gould, but the bullet hit the door frame and did not enter the interior of the vehicle.

After realizing Bird was not hit, Lewis tasered Gould. Gould let go of the shotgun but did not stop fighting.

The two were finally able to get Gould under control and he was taken to Mountain West Medical Center where he was treated for a possible prescription-drug overdose.

Gould was then booked into the Tooele County Detention Center, charged with aggravated assault, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Lewis is on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
