SALT LAKE CITY — A man accused of shooting and killing a former co-worker at an auto shop in West Valley has been charged.
Edwin Fong Carrillo, 40, of Salt Lake City, who goes by the moniker “Shorty,” was charged Monday in 3rd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony, as well as possession of a weapon by a restricted person and obstructing justice, both second-degree felonies.
Just after 7 p.m. on June 22, West Valley police responded to a shooting near 1400 West and 3500 South. The first arriving officer found Abdulraheem Al-Hisnawi, 49, had been shot in the stomach. At first, Al-Hisnawi was able to tell the officer he knew who shot him “but became less alert and unable to speak,” according to charging documents.
He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries about 90 minutes later, the charges state.
Police spoke with the owner of the auto shop, who said Carrillo — who had recently been fired — was responsible for the shooting, according to the charges.
Another employee was working on an RV with Al-Hisnawi when Carrillo showed up, the charges state.
“Al-Hisnawi asked Shorty to come talk. As they spoke, Shorty became angry. Shorty lifted his shirt and pulled a black handgun from his waistband. Al-Hisnawi grabbed the handgun by the barrel and directed it away from him. Al-Hisnawi pushed Shorty up against the RV and told him to calm down and put down the gun,” the charges state.
Al-Hisnawi then pushed Carrillo to the ground and began to walk away, according to the charges.
“Shorty sat up and fired one round at Al-Hisnawi, who doubled over and fell. Shorty stood up and ran over to Al-Hisnawi. Shorty then kicked Al-Hisnawi a few times before walking off,” the charges state.

Carrillo was arrested at a Midvale motel four days later. He told police that after he was pushed over, “he felt that Al-Hisnawi was coming at him so he fired the gun one time,” the charges state.
Carrillo initially told police he destroyed the gun after the shooting using a hammer and scattered the pieces throughout the Salt Lake area, according to the charges. He later “changed his story and stated that he fell asleep and when he woke up the gun was gone.”
Investigators later learned Carrillo had given a gun to a woman who helped pay for the motel room where he was found, the charges state. She turned that gun over to police.
Carrillo’s lengthy criminal history includes convictions for assault, burglary and drug-related crimes, according to court records.
