WEST VALLEY CITY — West Valley police have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting on Monday.
Edwin Fong Carrillo, 40, of Salt Lake City, was arrested Friday for investigation of murder, obstructing justice and possession of a weapon by a restricted person.
On Monday, police responded to 1430 W. 3500 South on a report of a shooting. Abdulraheem Al-Hisnawi, 49, was found with a gunshot wound to his stomach. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, according to police.
Police learned that the victim had been in a fight with Carrillo and that during the confrontation, Carrillo pulled out a gun, a police affidavit states.
“The victim struggled with Edwin to gain control over the weapon but was unable to and was ultimately shot,” according to the affidavit.
Early Friday, police located Carrillo in a hotel in Murray near 400 West and 5300 South. He told detectives that while in the fight with the victim, he fell to the ground and “looked up at the victim and shot him once. The victim fell to the ground and Edwin approached him and kicked him while he was laying down,” the affidavit states.
Carrillo learned the next day that the victim had died and police were looking for him. He got rid of the gun used in the shooting by “breaking it into pieces and scattering it along the streets of Salt Lake,” according to the affidavit.
Carrillo’s lengthy criminal history includes convictions for assault, burglary and drug-related crimes, according to court records.
