CEDAR CITY — A 49-year-old man died in custody Saturday in what the Iron County Sheriff's Office says was an apparent medical episode.
Justin Anderson was being booked into the Iron County Jail about 5:51 p.m. on suspicion of a drug-related offense when the episode began, the sheriff's office said in a news release Sunday.
Iron County Jail staff and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel provided medical attention, it wrote, but "despite all best efforts" to save his life Anderson was pronounced dead at the jail.
Iron County sheriff's detectives, members of the Critical Incident Task Force and personnel from the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner are now conducting an in-custody death investigation. Anderson's body was transported to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy and to determine the cause of death.
"More information will be released as it becomes available," the sheriff's office wrote. "The Iron County Sheriff's Office wants to express their condolences to the Anderson family."
