OREM — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Orem Temple on September 5, the church announced Wednesday.
Attendance will be by invitation only.
The temple will be located on a 16-acre site at approximately 1471 S. Geneva Road. The site is just about a half-mile south of I-15's University Parkway exit in Orem.
According to current plans, the temple will be 70,000 square feet, three stories tall and will include a center spire.
It's been a quick planning process for the Orem Temple. The temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson during the general conference in October 2019, with the location being revealed two months later.
The Orem Temple is one of many temples currently in the planning or construction stages in Utah. Temples have been announced in Syracuse, Taylorsville, Tooele Valley and Washington County, with temples in Layton and Saratoga Springs currently under construction.
There are 24 temples In Utah announced, under construction, under renovation or in operation.
Latter-day Saints consider temples to be sacred places. In temples, Latter-day Saints participate in sacred ceremonies, such as marriages and proxy baptisms on behalf of deceased ancestors.
