Glen Canyon to start phased reopening for recreational access to Lake Powell

Starting on Wednesday, recreation access to Lake Powell will begin reopening after initially closing some areas in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The Hite TV and Campground and Outpost Store will reopen on Wednesday. Starting on Thursday, commercial accommodations including lodging, gift shops, boat rentals and restaurants will reopen at Halls Crossing, Bullfrog and Wahweap. On Friday, the Lake Powell Halls Crossing public launch ramp will resume operations seven days a week to all boats. Additional ramps in the area near Arizona will also reopen as well as campgrounds near Bullfrog. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Utah reports highest single-day COVID-19 deaths at 8 with 134 new cases

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 134 from Monday, with eight new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Tuesday’s totals give Utah 7,518 total confirmed cases, with 96 current hospitalizations and 88 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 7,384 cases in the state. A total of 619 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state, up 24 from Monday. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Major League Soccer cancels All-Star Game, midseason clashes with Liga MX

Major League Soccer has canceled the annual MLS All-Star Game, originally scheduled for July 29 in Los Angeles against a Liga MX all-star squad, as the league remains on hiatus due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. In addition, the two leagues will not play in the second edition of the Leagues Cup or the third edition of the Campeones Cup, which features the reigning MLS Cup champion against the winner of Liga MX’s Campeon de Campeones. Technical difficulties with health department's website delaying daily COVID-19 numbers update

The Utah Department of Health is experiencing technical difficulties, delaying the agency's daily COVID-19 case counts update, officials said. The case numbers are typically updated daily around 1 p.m. on the state's coronavirus dashboard, but have yet to be updated as of 3 p.m. "We are working to resolve the issue and will send an update as soon as possible," health department public information officer Charla Haley said in an email. Shakespeare's Globe theater may close permanently due to COVID-19 lockdown

William Shakespeare's Globe theater, the famous London playhouse where the playwright's shows were performed, faces permanent closure as a result of coronavirus lockdown measures, the theater and UK politicians have warned. Lawmakers on Monday warned the UK government that the historic theater — which has been closed since March due to coronavirus restrictions — was faced with "insolvency and closure" as a result of COVID-19 lockdown's impact on its finances. — CNN

Sen. Mike Lee backs bill to speed up testing during pandemic

As states begin to reopen and people return to work, Sen. Mike Lee is cosponsoring legislation to let states approve and distribute diagnostic tests during a declared public health emergency. The Right to Test Act would empower states to reduce testing delays and more rapidly respond to the evolving health needs as they work to curb the spread of COVID-19 and future health threats, according to the four Republican sponsors in the Senate. “Our federal bureaucracy simply has not moved fast enough during this crisis,” Lee, R-Utah, said in a statement. “We need to empower the creativity of Americans to solve this crisis, and allowing states to cut through regulatory delays will do just that.” — Dennis Romboy, KSL

Stock indexes on Wall Street are mixed a day after big rally

Stocks are mixed in midday trading on Wall Street Tuesday, a day after the market had its biggest jump in more than five weeks. The S&P 500 was up 0.1% after wavering between gains and losses for much of the day. Technology stocks rose, offsetting losses in health care companies, banks and elsewhere in the market. Bond yields mostly fell, a sign that investors were feeling cautious. — Associated Press

Latter-day Saint leaders announce guidelines to return to weekly services

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is preparing to return to weekly services. The church, in a letter to local leaders on Tuesday, announced some meetings may resume on a limited basis. All church public gatherings — including sacrament meetings and stake conferences — have been suspended since March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic. — Ryan Miller, KSL.com

Utah residents asked to help honor veterans living in nursing homes

For nearly 10 weeks, many people have been isolating to avoid COVID-19. During that same time, the veterans who live in Utah’s four veterans’ nursing homes have also been in isolation. As Memorial Day approaches, the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs wanted to do something special this year for the more than 400 veterans living in those nursing homes across the state. Tired of quarantine, residents flock to Utah outdoors

After a weekend that more closely resembled a summer holiday, Monday proved to be another busy day in the Utah outdoors, as crowds sought a reprieve from pandemic life in the valleys. At Tibble Fork Reservoir, dozens lined the sun-soaked beaches and took to the waters in hopes of some fresh air and peace of mind, while numerous groups of hikers could be seen traversing trails. “We were like, ‘Monday’s going to be less crowded,’ but everyone probably had that same idea,” said Kelsey Hyde, who came to the reservoir with three of her friends. — Andrew Adams, KSL TV

Holladay Lions Rec Center being used for COVID-19 response

The Holladay Lions Recreation Center, 1661 E. Murray Holladay Road in Millcreek, was cordoned off with caution tape and metal fence barriers. Signs encouraging 6-foot social distancing “to prevent the spread of COVID-19” were posted around the perimeter of the building. What appeared to be a screening tent that was set up in the center’s parking lot billowed in the wind. Salt Lake County mayor’s office spokeswoman Chloe Morroni confirmed Monday that the Holladay Lions Recreation Center is being used “in response to COVID-19,” but would not say specifically how it’s being used or whether it’s a quarantine and isolation facility. — Katie McKellar, KSL

Utah’s June 30 primary election will be strictly vote-by-mail

“Your porch is your polling place” proclaim digital ads from the state about the new restrictions in place for Utah’s June 30 primary election. Because of COVID-19, it will be conducted entirely by mail. “The message we’re trying to get out to voters is if you want to vote in the primary election, be prepared,” Utah Deputy Elections Director Derek Brenchley said. “Check if you’re going to receive a ballot. Mnuchin to face grilling about small-business lending effort

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will likely come under tough questioning from senators Tuesday about a small business lending program included in the government's $2 trillion relief package. Lawmakers from both parties have criticized the Payroll Protection Program, which initially provided $349 billion in forgivable loans to small companies but has been plagued by a host of problems. — Associated Press

Utah reported 146 new cases of COVID-19, with no new deaths.

Brigham City canceled its annual arts festival originally slated for June 13. The festival is expected to be held in June 2021.
