National parks visitors should plan for 'new normal'

After closing amid the coronavirus pandemic, the National Park Service is testing public access at several parks across the nation, including two in Utah, with limited offerings and services. Visitor centers and campgrounds remain largely shuttered at Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef, but visitors are welcome at some of the sites. — Associated Press

Provo airport pushing forward with upgrades amid slowdown during pandemic

While the Provo Airport’s commercial flights are down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, operations continue, including the construction of a new terminal that will significantly expand the airport’s capacity. “We are still open, we’re still operating,” said airport manager Steve Gleason. “There are bright spots, slow spots, but we are going to keep going and weather this storm like everybody else.” —Sahalie Donaldson, KSL

Children with autism, parents face unique challenges during pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the lives of nearly every American. But for many children with autism who thrive on routine, and their parents, the changes are causing additional, unique complications. For Kim Deverall, every day is a battle keeping her 10-year-old son, Kai, safe and well. With school canceled, she says she’s seen Kai, who is self-injurious, regress in his development. He eats things he shouldn’t eat and is experiencing heightened anxiety due to the changes in his life, Deverall said, as well as showing aggression toward his family members. “Even now, his anxiety is so high that he won’t even touch or walk on carpet or rugs,” the mom said. Deverall said she spoke about her son’s behavior not to complain, but to bring awareness to what so many families are going through during the pandemic. — Ashley Imlay, KSL

Pence self-isolating after exposure to aide with virus

Vice President Mike Pence was self-isolating Sunday after an aide tested positive for the coronavirus last week, joining three of the nation's top scientists in taking protective steps after possible exposure. An administration official said Pence was voluntarily keeping his distance from other people in line with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has repeatedly tested negative for COVID-19 since his exposure but was following the advice of medical officials. “Vice President Pence will continue to follow the advice of the White House Medical Unit and is not in quarantine," spokesman Devin O'Malley said Sunday. "Additionally, Vice President Pence has tested negative every single day and plans to be at the White House tomorrow.” — Associated Press

Under 1% of MLB employees test positive for virus antibodies

Just 0.7% of Major League Baseball employees tested positive for antibodies to COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Results were based about about 5,600 completed records from employees of 26 clubs. Samples were obtained on April 14 and 15. "It allows us to get a peek of the nation-wide prevalence," said Dr. Jay Bhattacharya at Stanford, one the study's leaders, said Sunday. The start of the baseball season has been delayed because of the virus outbreak. There's no timetable for when the season might begin — Associated Press

US census stirs uncertainty for those displaced by virus

It's not meant to be a trick question, but many filling out their 2020 U.S. census form struggle to answer: How many people were staying at your home on April 1? The pandemic has fostered sudden, unexpected dislocation, making a typically easy question confusing for the newly displaced. Some people living in coronavirus hot spots fled their homes or were hospitalized. Students living off-campus moved in with their parents once universities closed. Travelers got stuck far from home because of health concerns. — Associated Press

One more dead from COVID-19 Sunday, health department says

In its daily update on the latest coronavirus figures in the state, the Utah Department of Health announced Mother's Day that 148 new cases and one additional death were identified since Saturday. That brings Utah's total to 6,251 cases, up from 6,103 the day before, and 67 deaths. The state has now tested at least 146,510 Utahns, up 3,216 tests from Saturday. The health department reports 14 new hospitalizations for COVID-19, meaning 512 total Utahns have been hospitalized with the disease since the pandemic began. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Navajo Nation reports 97 more cases, two deaths Saturday

The Navajo Department of Health reported 97 new cases of COVID-19 and two deaths Saturday, bringing the Navajo Nation total to 2,973 cases and 98 deaths from the disease. Utah's San Juan County is responsible for 50 of those cases, total, so far. Most of the cases come from tribal lands in New Mexico and Arizona, including 808 total cases in McKinley County, New Mexico. "We’re very close to having 3,000 positive cases, but we also have to remember that a good number of these individuals have recovered or are in the process of recovering," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez in a news release. "We’re seeing more testing being conducted and we’re very hopeful that the curve will continue to flatten. Please continue to pray for our people and to abide by the 57-hour weekend curfew." “This Mother’s Day, if you can’t be with your loved ones please give them a call and please pray for your families.
