SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health is reporting 194 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death from the disease Sunday.

That brings the state to 5,175 total cases of the novel coronavirus, up from 4,981 the day before for an increase of 3.9%. Fifty Utahns have died from the disease, and 436 total have been hospitalized.

The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease, and those who have died.

Health department spokeswoman Charla Haley said in an email that the Utahn who died was a Salt Lake County woman. She had been hospitalized, Haley said, and she was between 45 and 64 years old with a history of underlying health conditions.

The health department estimates that 2,283 Utahns have recovered from the coronavirus; Utahns who were diagnosed more than three weeks ago and have not died are considered recovered by the health department.

A total of 122,102 Utahns have now been tested for COVID-19, up 4,298 tests from Saturday, and 4.2% of tests have come back positive so far.

Nationally, NBC News is reporting 1,131,612 total coronavirus cases and 66,428 deaths. New York state alone accounts for 24,035 of those deaths, according to a New York Times tally.

Many states, hit hard but not to the scale of places like New York, have begun to reopen businesses and loosen restrictions. Utah moved to the next phase of its coronavirus response on Friday, encouraging cautious behavior but allowing dine-in service at restaurants, workouts at gyms, haircuts and other previously off-limits activities.
