PROVO — A woman and toddler are in critical condition Saturday after they were struck by a southbound FrontRunner train in Provo.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. at 500 South and 900 West, according to UTA spokesman Carl Arky.

The woman, 21, was carrying a 2-year-old child around a crossing gate at the time, Arky said. The gate was down and the lights were flashing, he said, but the woman tried to get across the track before the train arrived.

Provo Fire & Rescue said the woman was being treated at Utah Valley Hospital, and Arky said the child was transported by medical helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Arky said he was not certain of the relationship between the woman and child.
