Draper man accused of assaulting, abusing his 85-year-old mom

DRAPER — A Draper man who recently moved back in with his elderly mother uninvited was arrested Sunday after police say he abused her and took over her house.

Robert Wayne Ohlsen, 58, was arrested for investigation of aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult, assault, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and interfering with an arresting officer.

The investigation began Sunday when Ohlsen’s 85-year-old mother called police to report her son “got upset for her making coffee too loudly” and threw a remote and headphones at her, according to a police affidavit.

“(She) also expressed to me that she did not want Robert living in her apartment, and that he was evicted last year from his and just moved into her house without permission. When he moved in, he took her bedroom, causing Marilyn to have to sleep on the couch,” the affidavit states. She also said he had “continually” physically threatened her “by throwing punches at her face and kicking, stopping just before he made contact with her face and other areas of her body.”

The woman also told police that on another occasion Ohlsen pushed her over while she was sitting in a chair because “he got mad at her again” and she couldn’t get up without assistance, but her son wouldn’t help her, according to the affidavit.

“I believed in addition to the physical abuse, Robert was intentionally inflicting fear of serious bodily injury onto (his mother) causing her to fear for her health and safety,” the arresting officer wrote in the report.

When police arrived at the house, Ohlsen became agitated.

“Initially, I told Robert that his mom no longer wanted him to stay there and he was going to need to leave, but he refused. At that time, I told Robert he was being placed under arrest. At that time Robert told me, ‘No, I’m not going to jail,’” the affidavit states.

Ohlsen allegedly struggled with officers as he resisted arrested but was eventually taken into custody.
