VERNAL — A 16-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital and part of Main Street in Vernal is closed after an officer-involved shooting late Thursday, authorities said.
Vernal police officers and Uintah County sheriff’s deputies responded to a request to make contact with the boy, who is on probation, on Main Street about 11:10 p.m., according to a news release from the Uintah County Sheriff's Office.
Officers confronted the boy, whose name has not yet been released. His hands were concealed around his waist, they said, and an officer believed he had a weapon.
The teen advanced on the officer, who used a K-9 to try to arrest him. A Vernal police officer fired shots at the teen, but the shots did not hit him or anyone else, according to the release. No officers were injured during the incident.
The teen was taken to a local hospital for evaluation after he was bitten by a police dog at the scene. He was then booked into the Split Mountain Youth Detention Center in Vernal, the release said.
Main Street was closed from 500 West to 700 West for several hours while authorities investigated the incident. The road reopened shortly before 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Correction: A previous version of this article said the boy was on parole and not probation.
