SALT LAKE CITY — Only those invited to speak and pray at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' upcoming general conference will attend, the church said in a Thursday news release.

The conference will be broadcast from a small auditorium on Temple Square instead of the Conference Center. The First Presidency will conduct the sessions, those invited will speak and pray, and the choir music will be prerecorded.

"By making these adjustments, we feel we can assist those who are working to slow the spread and impact of this pandemic. We are grateful for them and continue to pray for them. We are touched by the many accounts we hear of ministering to those in need during these uncertain times. We pray for Heavenly Father’s choicest blessings upon you," the news release reads.

The church announced in mid-March that the conference would be held in the Conference Center with leaders, speakers, musicians, choirs, technicians and others who were assigned to assist with general conference. The public would not be permitted to attend, and the conference would be broadcast "via technology only," the church said.

During the church's conference last October, the faith's leader, President Russell M. Nelson, promised that the April conference would be "unforgettable," since it marked the 200th anniversary of the first time church founder Joseph Smith said he saw God and Jesus Christ. President Nelson has since asked members to take extra time to prepare spiritually for the conference.

"This will be a remarkable conference. Messages of truth, hope, and inspiration will prevail as we commemorate the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ and seek to hear Him," the Thursday news release reads.
