Coronavirus updates: VASA Fitness closes; Lee's Marketplace offers free curbside pickup for those older than 60

SALT LAKE CITY — Here are the latest coronavirus-related updates from Utah and around the world.

Local businesses and schools are preparing for the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to spread by announcing closures and limiting person-to-person contact as much as possible.

There are currently 41 confirmed cases in Utah, including residents and visitors. The Utah Department of Health hasn't updated its numbers since Monday at 1 p.m. which showed 29 residents testing positive and an additional 10 non-residents.

As of Monday at 6 p.m., 13 people in Summit County had tested positive for the disease, including residents and visitors, according to Summit County Health Department. The state’s health department showed Summit County with 11 confirmed positive cases.

With the new Summit County cases the total number of confirmed Utah cases, including residents and visitors, rose from 39 to 41. It wasn't immediately clear if the two new Summit County cases were residents or visitors.

There are currently more than 3,000 confirmed cases in the United States and over 169,000 global cases, according to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.

Health chief halts Ohio primary; 3 other states forge ahead

Ohio called off its presidential primary just hours before polls were set to open there and in three other states, an 11th-hour decision the governor said was necessary to prevent further fueling the coronavirus pandemic that has paralyzed the nation. Officials in Arizona, Florida and Illinois felt they had done enough to ensure the safety of voters, even as concerns mounted that there will not be enough poll workers in some precincts and voters will be confused after polling places in nursing homes were moved to other locations. Zion National Park temporarily suspends shuttle service

Effective Monday, Zion National Park suspended its shuttle service indefinitely to comply with the novel coronavirus guidelines. The park remains opens to visitors who can drive up the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive until limited parking is filled. Once parking is full, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive will close and open intermittently as parking spaces open up.

Hogle Zoo closes 'until further notice' amid COVID-19 concerns

Hogle Zoo will be closed beginning Tuesday until further notice citing COVID-19 concerns, officials from the Salt Lake City-based zoo announced Monday. “As a family destination, our goal is to protect the health and well-being of our animals, the community and Zoo staff,” officials said in a statement. “Zoo leadership will continue to monitor developments of the outbreak and follow guidance from federal, state, and local authorities to help determine when we will reopen.” Trainers will remain at the zoo to take care of the animals at the zoo, officials said. They added that anyone who has purchased zoo tickets for a date while the zoo is closed can still use those tickets for a later date in 2020 after the zoo has reopened.

2 health care systems postpone nonessential surgeries amid COVID-19 outbreak

Intermountain Healthcare and University of Utah Health have postponed all nonessential surgeries to free up resources amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, officials announced Monday.

Utah State Tax Commission limits in-office services

The Utah State Tax Commission has changed some procedures amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The deadline to submit state taxes hasn’t changed, however if federal deadlines change, Utah will follow suit. The commission will remain open for normal hours, but in-office services will be limited. More information is available here.

Utah DMV closes some locations to limit COVID-19 spread

All Summit County Department of Motor Vehicle locations have closed as of Monday. The Grand County DMV office, located in Moab, has also closed until further notice. Updates on which DMV locations are open can be found here.

'SNL' reportedly suspending production for 3 weeks

NBC's flagship sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" will shut down for three weeks, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show's next episode was originally scheduled for March 28 and was set to feature John Krasinski as host.

UFC postpones 3 events

The mixed martial arts competition Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC, has canceled its next three events, previously scheduled for Portland, Oregon, Columbus, Ohio and London, according to Sports Illustrated.

Thanksgiving Point temporarily closing venues to prevent coronavirus spread

Thanksgiving Point in Lehi is temporarily closing buildings and venues through March 29 to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, according to the company's website. Some education programs, such as the "Tales for Tots" program, will continue, according to a news release from the company. “We join with the rest of the country in taking care of each other and ourselves,” Mike L. Washburn, CEO and President of Thanksgiving Point, said in the release. “We strive to be a safe haven from the storms of life and a fun place for families. We are committed to keeping our property safe for everyone. During this time, we encourage our employees and guests to care for one another and be patient as we work through these issues.”

Utah Driver License Division limiting branch services

Trump admin: Public should avoid gatherings larger than 10 people, cancel discretionary travel in bid to slow outbreak

The White House on Monday urged all older Americans to stay home and everyone to avoid crowds and eating out at restaurants as part of sweeping guidelines meant to combat an expected surge of coronavirus cases. Among the new recommendations: Over the next 15 days, Americans should not gather in groups of more than 10 people, schooling should be at home and discretionary travel and social visits should be avoided. If anyone in a household tests positive for the virus, everyone who lives there should stay home. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert had previously said gatherings of large groups should be limited to a maximum of 100 people.

COVID-19 cases in Utah up to 29 residents, 10 visitors

Utah Department of Health officials on Monday said there are now 29 cases of the disease in Utah residents, with 10 cases in visitors in the state. There are now new cases of the disease in residents of the Wasatch County, Tooele and Southwest Utah health districts, as well as a visitor in the Utah County health district, according to UDOH. Other cases are present in Salt Lake County, Davis County, Summit County and Weber-Morgan health districts. Previously, there were 21 cases in Utah residents and 7 cases in non-residents.

Help available for businesses and employees unable to work

At a press conference Monday, Utah government and business leaders discussed the need to keep the state’s economy healthy as the outbreak continues. Gov. Gary Herbert announced the formation of an economic development task force that will work alongside the Utah Coronavirus Task Force, which has already been in place. He said while the state is working to preserve the health and safety of its residents, leaders are also working to preserve the health of Utah's economy. People who are unable to work due to the spread of the virus and do not have paid sick leave are encouraged to apply for unemployment insurance

Canada closing borders to prevent coronavirus spread

Canada will close its borders to non-residents in order to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, but U.S. citizens will be exempt for the time being, according to CNBC.

Dine-in options prohibited at Salt Lake County restaurants starting tonight

The Salt Lake County Health Department declared a public health emergency and said dine-in options at restaurants in the county will be prohibited starting at 11 p.m. Monday. Other dining options, including takeout, curbside pickup, drive-thru, delivery and mobile food services such as food trucks and carts will still be allowed, with some modifications, the health department said. Romney calls for financial aid to all Americans amid coronavirus outbreak

U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, on Monday called for sending $1,000 to each American adult to provide some economic stability during the coronavirus pandemic. “The House coronavirus response package contains critical measures to help families in Utah and across the nation in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, and the Senate should act swiftly on this legislation," Romney said in a news release Monday. “We also urgently need to build on this legislation with additional action to help families and small businesses meet their short-term financial obligations, ease the financial burden on students entering the workforce, and protect health workers on the front lines and their patients by improving telehealth services." Romney also proposed several other coronavirus aid policies in addition to the House aid bill, which was passed by the House last week. Romney's additional policies include issuing grants to small businesses, allowing students to request Pell grants if they are affected by COVID-19, allowing recent graduates to defer student loans, and requiring insurance plans to temporarily cover telehealth services.

Latter-day Saint leaders adjust some missionary service in light of COVID-19

Latter-day Saint leaders announced Monday some temporary changes to missionary service in relation to the spread of COVID-19. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said any missionary with a release date of Sept. 1 or earlier in the United States and Canada may be released once they reach 21 months of service.

Donovan Mitchell donation will help Granite School District students eat lunch while classes are postponed

A donation from Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell will help Granite School District students eat lunch while they are not attending school due to the coronavirus pandemic, the team announced Monday. “As we all navigate the challenges that have arisen with COVID-19, there are many people impacted. My mom’s career in education made me value children and the importance of academics, and I want to make sure that kids can continue to eat a meal while they can’t go to school," Mitchell said Monday on Good Morning America, where he announced the news. Mitchell tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, last week. His teammate Rudy Gobert also tested positive. Mitchell's donation will help students, as many as 10,040 per day, eat while they are off from school. Granite School District, which is one of the largest in the state, serves parts of Salt Lake County including West Valley City, Kearns, Taylorsville and Magna, as well as parts of West Jordan, Murray and Cottonwood Heights. “Our community is resilient and unified, and seeing how people have come together during this time makes me proud to represent this great state,” Mitchell said.

Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah officials ask residents to restrict all non-essential travel

Authorities in Daggett, Duchesne and Uintah counties in northeast Utah are now asking residents of those areas to refrain from any non-essential travel outside their communities to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

23 Utah passengers from cruise ship return home

A total of 23 Utahns who were passengers on a Grand Princess cruise ship returned home Sunday evening, according to the Utah Department of Health. The passengers first arrived in Georgia and were then flown to the Utah Air National Guard base in Salt Lake City, where they met family members to be taken home, UDOH said. All the passengers had no symptoms of COVID-19 and have either tested negative or are awaiting test results. They will be quarantined for two weeks and will be monitored by health officials. Health officials are still working to bring home 14 other Utah passengers, who are currently located in Texas and California, UDOH said.
