SALT LAKE CITY — Two more Utah cases of COVID-19 were confirmed Sunday as the state updated its official numbers at 12:45 p.m.

That brings the Utah total to 21 cases, including 14 in Salt Lake County, three in Davis County, two in Summit County, and one each in southwest Utah and the Weber-Morgan health district.

Additionally, seven non-Utah residents have tested positive in the state. Six of those non-residents are in Summit County, and most recently one in Utah County.

As more tests become available, the total number of confirmed cases is expected to increase.

The news furthers a sharp increase in positive tests in just a matter of hours. On Saturday morning, the Utah Department of Health announced a Summit County man had tested positive in the state's first instance of "community spread"; the man had not traveled recently or been in contact with a known case.

While symptomatic, the man worked a shift at a Park City bar, officials said.

At the time, the department reported nine total cases in Utah. By Saturday night, that had increased to 19. The rise was fueled mostly by Salt Lake County, which tacked on nine cases during the day.

Officials responded swiftly to the evolving situation this week, restricting public gatherings and encouraging residents to work from home if possible. On Friday, they announced that Utah public schools will undergo a "soft closure" for two weeks, starting Monday.

The disruptions are hitting businesses hard as many residents avoid public gatherings and stores struggle to stay stocked.
