UNDATED (AP) — A new rule intended to help speed up the game also could thwart attempts to steal signs in college baseball. The NCAA will allow a pitcher to wear a wristband with a signal card when the season opens Friday. That will allow him and the catcher to look into the dugout to get pitch calls and eliminate the need for the catcher to relay the call with hand signs. Sign stealing has come to the fore since the Houston Astros were found to have used electronics to steal signs in 2017 and 2018.

UNDATED (AP) — Riding a seven-game winning streak and alone atop the Big Ten Conference standings, No. 9 Maryland seeks to keep the momentum going at Michigan State on Saturday night. The Terrapins were winless on the road and mired in a two-game skid before getting on their current roll behind sophomore forward Jalen Smith, who has had a double-double in seven straight outings. The Spartans stopped a three-game slide by beating Illinois on Tuesday. In another big game Saturday, Rutgers looks to stay unbeaten at home in a matchup with Illinois, which has lost three in a row. Also, surprising second-place Penn State hosts skidding Northwestern.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — After scoring a career-high 36 points in the Big Ten title game last March and tallying 23 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Maryland guard Kaila Charles realized flashy numbers bring no satisfaction in defeat. This season, Charles is content to be one of several contributors in a balanced attack that has lifted the No. 10 Terrapins into sole possession of first place in the conference. Although her scoring is down from last year, Charles is still the favorite to be named Big Ten player of the year.
