SALT LAKE CITY — Davis County sheriff’s officials are warning citizens about a tax scam that claims individuals owe the state of Utah money.
Scammers are sending citizens fake, but official-looking documents, via mail claiming the recipient is indebted to the government.
The sheriff’s office is only aware of one resident who scammers tried to deceive, but there could be more, according to Elizabeth Sollis, Davis County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.
Thankfully, the resident didn’t fall for the scam and instead took it to the sheriff’s office, which Sollis said was the right thing to do.
With tax season coming up, it could be easy for people to fall for these scams since they are likely receiving real tax documents via mail as well, Sollis said.
However, it’s important citizens remain vigilant and research anything that is asking for money. In this case, the documents had the name of a fake agency that does not exist, Sollis noted.
Anyone who receives suspicious looking mail from someone claiming to be an official agency should reach out to local law enforcement and verify if the documents are real — which they likely aren’t if they are asking for money, Sollis said.
Individuals can also check with the Utah Consumer Protection Division and the Utah Better Business Bureau to see if a person or organization is credible.
