SALT LAKE CITY — Police on Friday arrested a Salt Lake man who they say raped a woman last year.

Shafi Warsame Awale, 32, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of rape, forcible sodomy and drug possession.

The woman, who “was in a wheelchair at the time of the assault,” told police she met Awale through a dating app and met him on May 18, 2019. He drove her to a parking lot at an apartment complex and assaulted her, accordant to a police affidavit.

“After sexually assaulting her, he ultimately dropped her off at a coffee shop in Salt Lake City. Video surveillance shows the suspect dropping the victim off,” the affidavit states.

Awale was interviewed by detectives on Friday and was arrested. While he was being booked into jail, methamphetamine and heroin were found hidden in the back of his phone, police say.
