WITNESS: WEINSTEIN RAPED HER, DESPITE PLEAS

NEW YORK (AP) — “No, please don’t do this, I don’t want it.”

One of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers says despite her pleas, the movie titan raped her. The testimony is from Mimi Haleyi, who says the incident happened just weeks after she arrived in New York to work on one of Weinstein’s TV shows, “Project Runway.” Haleyi’s claims form the basis of one of two charges Weinstein faces — and she is the first of those two accusers to take the stand. On cross-examination, the defense mined her account for details that may help Weinstein. She stayed in touch with him, had sex with him on another occasion and even took a cross-country and cross-Atlantic flight for which he footed the bill.

ACCUSER SAYS SHE CONFRONTED WEINSTEIN ABOUT REPUTATION

NEW YORK (AP) — One of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers says she told the Hollywood mogul off about his reputation with women. Mimi Haleyi says once Weinstein showed up at her apartment and begged her to join him on a trip to Paris for a fashion show. She declined, telling him, “you know you have a terrible reputation with women.” In her testimony yesterday, Haleyi said Weinstein was offended — and asked, “What have you heard?” Scores of women have accused Weinstein of rape or sexual assault — or making crude advances, often with the lure of work in Hollywood. Weinstein denies the allegations, saying the sex he had was consensual.

KOBE BRYANT PILOT: TRYING TO AVOID CLOUDS

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — We’re starting to get some information about what was going on in the helicopter Kobe Bryant was in just before it slammed into a Southern California hillside on Sunday. Air traffic controllers report the pilot reported he was climbing to avoid a cloud layer. It was the last communication. The aircraft then plunged more than 1,000 feet and crashed. The crash killed the former NBA star, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others, including the pilot. Efforts to recover the remains of the victims are continuing.

NBA POSTPONES GAME IN L.A. TONIGHT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Too soon. The NBA says it has postponed tonight’s scheduled game between the Los Angeles Lakers and their crosstown rivals, the L.A. Clippers. The league says it decided to spike the game “out of respect for the Lakers.” The contest would have come just two days after a helicopter carrying former Lakers star Kobe Bryant crashed into a hillside, killing Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and 7 others.

GIANNA BRYANT WANTED TO “BE LIKE” KOBE

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Any dad who loves sports — and has only daughters — can imagine the bond between Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. He was Mamba; he called her Mambacita. And the teen wanted to make her mark on the game, planning to play at Connecticut before joining the WNBA. Those plans ended Sunday when the helicopter carrying her and her dad crashed. Only time — if she had it — would tell if Gianna would be a star. But the women’s hoops coach at Vanguard University says Gigi “was really turning into a special player.” Russ Davis says while it’s hard to predict the future, from what he saw, Gigi “was going to have a bright one.”

HOLLYWOOD PAYS TRIBUTE TO BRYANT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two years ago, Kobe Bryant was nominated for — and won — an Oscar. Yesterday, his showbiz peers paid tribute to him by observing a moment of silence. During the pause, Renée Zellweger, Al Pacino and dozens of other Academy Award nominees for this year bowed their heads before the annual Oscars luncheon. Bryant won his Oscar for the animated short, “Dear Basketball.” Academy president David Rubin noted that for all his success on the basketball court, Bryant was the most excited person at the awards ceremony that year. The moment of silence ended with a burst of applause.

POST IDLES REPORTER FOR BRYANT TWEET

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Post is drawing fire from some of its own employees — after putting a political reporter on leave for a tweet after Kobe Bryant died. On Sunday, Felicia Sonmez posted a link to a story about the rape allegation against the former NBA superstar. The Post says Sonmez got death and rape threats and had to move to a hotel after someone posted her address online. The paper’s executive editor Marty Baron calls the tweet “a real lack of judgment” that hurt the newspaper. Members of the union representing Post writers opposes the suspension, saying reporters must “tell the public the whole truth as we know it.” In 2003, Bryant was accused of raping a woman at a Colorado resort. The accuser later asked that the charges be dropped. Bryant said it was consensual and the two later settled a civil lawsuit filed by the woman.

O.J. SIMPSON DEFAMATION SUIT

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A court officer says it is a Nevada judge, not a private arbitrator, that should hear O.J. Simpson's defamation lawsuit against a Las Vegas hotel-casino. Simpson blames workers at The Cosmopolitan for telling TMZ he was drunk and disruptive at the hotel, causing him to be banned. The hotel claims Simpson can’t be defamed because his reputation is already tattered because he was charged with killing his ex-wife and her friend in 1994 — and was imprisoned for a 2007 armed-robbery case.
