LeBron passes Kobe, but 76ers beat Lakers

UNDATED (AP) — LeBron James continued his climb up the NBA’s all-time scoring list on Saturday, but he couldn’t prevent the Los Angeles Lakers from absorbing a loss in Philadelphia.

Bryant moved ahead of Kobe Bryant into third place while scoring 29 points in the Lakers’ 108-91 setback against the 76ers. James hit the milestone basket with 7:23 left in the third quarter after entering the game needing 18 points to pass Bryant. The bucket gave him 33,644 points.

James received a standing ovation from Sixers fans when the achievement was announced by the public address announcer. Bryant tweeted his congratulations, saying: “Continuing to move the game forward @KingJames. Much respect my brother #33644.”

But the 76ers improved to 6-3 since losing All-Star center Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) with a torn ligament on his left ring finger. Ben Simmons led the way with 29 points and 10 rebounds, while Tobias Harris also furnished 29 points.

Checking out Saturday’s other NBA action:

— Rudy Gobert (goh-BEHR’) had 22 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks to carry the Jazz to their 14th victory in 15 games, a 112-107 comeback over the Mavericks. Gobert converted a 3-pointer that gave Utah its first lead in the second half, added a tiebreaking tip-in and blocked an easy layup attempt to keep Utah ahead. Utah also received 25 points from Donovan Mitchell and 23 from Bojan (BOY’-ahn) Bogdanovic.

— Dennis Schroder (SHROO’-dur) dropped in 26 points and Chris Paul had 25 to carry the Thunder to their fifth-straight win, 113-104 over the Timberwolves. Paul had 10 points during a 31-12 run that appeared to give the Thunder control in the third period.

— Kyrie Irving provided 17 of his 45 points in the third quarter to help the Nets overtime a double-digit deficit and beat the Pistons, 121-111 in overtime. Brooklyn's Jarrett Allen finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

— Zach LaVine (lah-VEEN’) delivered 44 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Bulls in a 118-106 win against the Cavaliers. Tomas Satoransky added 19 points, five boards and five assists for Chicago, which pulled away by outscoring Cleveland, 40-19 in the third quarter.

NBA-MAVERICKS-WARRIORS TRADE

Mavs get Cauley-Stein from Warriors

DALLAS (AP) — The Mavericks have completed a trade that brings them 7-foot center Willie Cauley-Stein from the Warriors for a second-round draft pick this year.

Cauley-Stein is averaging 7.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 41 games this season, including 37 starts. He was leading the Warriors with 1.22 blocks a game before the trade.

The Mavericks needed help on their front line after starting center Dwight Powell tore his right Achilles tendon last week, ending his season.

T25 MEN’S BASKETBALL-SCHEDULE

Bears extend win streak

UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Baylor has stretched its winning streak to 16 games.

MaCio Teague and Devonte Bandoo scored 16 points apiece in Baylor’s 72-61 victory against Florida. The 17-1 Bears overcame an early eight-point deficit and led by 19 points in the second half before the Gators mounted a minor rally.

The Bears took control by closing the first half on a 13-2 spurt, turning a tie game into a double-digit lead.

Davion Mitchell finished with 11 points and six assists for Baylor, which was a slight underdog entering the game despite its No. 1 ranking.

In other top-25 men’s basketball games:

— Second-ranked Gonzaga coasted to a 92-59 rout of Pacific behind Killian Tillie’s 22 points and 10 boards. Filip Petrusev was among six Bulldogs to score in double figures, furnishing 17 points despite an ankle injury that made him a gametime decision.

— Devon Dotson dropped in 22 points and Udoka Azubuike (oo-DOH’-kah az-ah-BOO’-kay) added 18 to lead No. 3-ranked Kansas to a 74-68 victory over Tennessee. The Jayhawks were playing their first game since Silvio De Sousa and David McCormack were suspended by the Big 12 for their roles in a brawl against Kansas State.

— Sixth-ranked Louisville scored 18 straight points in the first half and hit 10 of its 21 3-point attempts in an 80-62 thumping of Clemson. Darius Perry set career highs with five 3-pointers and 19 points in the Cardinals’ sixth win in a row.

— Wyatt Wilkes came off the bench to shoot 5-for-6 from 3-point range and score 19 points as No. 5 Florida State held on for an 85-84 win over Notre Dame. Trent Forrest and RaiQuan Gray each scored 13 points for the Seminoles, who missed their last nine shots before earning their 10th consecutive victory.

— Dayton earned its ninth straight win as Obi Toppin had 24 points and 12 rebounds in the seventh-ranked Flyers’ 87-79 victory at Richmond. Jalen Crutcher added 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the 18-2 Flyers, who led 40-32 at halftime and took control with a 12-0 run.

— Collin Gillespie scored 18 points, grabbed eight rebounds and hit Jeremiah Robinson-Earl for a dunk with 55 seconds left to help ninth-ranked Villanova secure a victory at Providence, 64-60. Robinson-Earl finished with 17 points for the Wildcats, who blew a 10-point lead in the final 12 minutes before earning their sixth consecutive win.

— No. 14 West Virginia posted a 74-51 win over Missouri as Jermaine Haley delivered 15 points and nine rebounds. Miles McBride finished with 15 points and the Mountaineers went on a 20-0 spurt that gave them a 47-25 lead with 12:28 to play.

— Nick Richards contributed seven of his 25 points in overtime, including the game-deciding free throws with 10 seconds left to send 15th-ranked Kentucky past No. 18 Texas Tech, 76-74. Richards scored the first five points in overtime for the 15-4 Wildcats, who blew a 10-point lead in second half and went the final six minutes of regulation without a field goal.

— Isaac Okoro scored 19 points and Samir Doughty scored 18 as 16th-ranked Auburn held off Iowa State, 80-76 to improve to 17-2. Okoro provided 10 straight points to help the Tigers take a 76-62 lead with under six minutes remaining.

— SMU pulled off a 74-70 upset of No. 20 Memphis as Kendric Davis had 20 points and Emmanuel Bandoumel finished with 14. D.J. Jeffries had 18 points for the Tigers, who fell to 14-5.

— Ayo Dosunmu capped his 27-point performance by hitting a contested jumper from the free throw line with a half-second left to give No. 21 Illinois a 64-62 triumph over Michigan.

— Alonzo Verge Jr. scored on a layup with 10.9 seconds left to complete Arizona State’s comeback from a 22-point deficit in a 66-65 triumph over No. 22 Arizona.

— No. 23 Colorado beat Washington for the first time in six tries as Tyler Bey contributed 16 points and McKinley Wright IV had 15 in the Buffaloes’ 76-62 decision over the Huskies.

— Akwaski Yeboah provided 20 points and Geo Baker hit a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to send No. 24 Rutgers past Nebraska, 75-72.

NHL-ALL-STAR GAME

Pacific beats Atlantic for All-Star bragging rights

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Pacific Division has captured the NHL All-Star game for the third time in five years since it became a 3-on-3 tournament.

Sharks forward Tomas Hertl (HUR’-tul) capped his five-goal night by breaking a 4-4 tie with 2:36 remaining to give the Pacific a 5-4 victory against the Atlantic Division. The Atlantic had a 3-1 lead until Canucks forward Elias Pettersson scored twice in the Pacific’s four-goal final period.

Boston forward David Pastrnak (PAHS’-tur-nahk) was named All-Star MVP after scoring four goals and adding two assists in the Atlantic’s games against the Metropolitan and Pacific divisions.

The Atlantic advanced by downing the Metropolitan Division, 9-5. Pastrnak and Senators forward Anthony Duclair each completed hat tricks after Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman netted the tiebreaking goal while the Atlantics outscored the Metros, 5-1 in the final period.

The Pacific rolled to a 10-5 pounding of the Central Division as Hertl scored four times for the winners. Draisaitl added a hat trick and an assist for the Pacific squad.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-SENIOR BOWL

Gordon sharp as North beats South in Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon led the North to three touchdowns in the third quarter of a 31-17 victory over the South in the Senior Bowl.

Gordon completed 8 of 12 passes for 69 yards and two short touchdowns. That included a 2-yard scoring strike to Notre Dame's Chase Claypool for a second straight big third-down completion.

Oregon’s Justin Herbert shined for the South while completing 9 of 12 passes in the first quarter for 83 yards and a TD.

TENNIS-AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Kenin stops Gauff’s run

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Sofia Kenin has ended the Australian Open run of 15-year-old Coco Gauff.

The 14th-seeded Kenin dropped a first-set tiebreak before storming back for a 6-7, 6-3. 6-0 win over Gauff in an all-American matchup. Gauff was fresh off a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Naomi Osaka before running out of gas in the 2-hour, 9-minute match, committing seven double-faults and 48 unforced errors.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIH’-toh-vah) was the first player to advance to the quarterfinals at Melbourne. The women’s seventh seed rallied from a set and a break down to forge a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Marie Sakkari.

Kvitova lost last year's final at Melbourne Park to Naomi Osaka.

Top-ranked Ash Barty beat American Alison Riske 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena, breaking Riske's serve in the final game when Riske double-faulted on match point. French Open champion Barty will play her quarterfinal match on Tuesday against two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIHT'-oh-vuh).

Quiang Wang couldn’t ride the momentum of her third-round victory against 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. Ons Jabeur earned a 7-6, 6-1 win over Wang to earn the right to face Kenin in the quarterfinals.

Milos Raonic (ROW’-nihch) is the first man through to the quarterfinals after firing 35 aces in a 6-4. 6-3, 7-5 victory over Marin Cilic (CHEE’-lihch). Raonic was quickly followed by second seed Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch), who was a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 winner against No. 14 Diego Schwartzman. Djokovic had only eight aces but just one double-fault while winning 75% of his first serves.

Tennys Sandgren is into the Australian Open quarterfinals for the second time in three years after beating 12th-seeded Fabio Fognini in four sets in a heated match.

PGA-FARMERS INSURANCE

Rahm grabs lead from Palmer

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jon Rahm will carry a one-stroke lead into the final round of the PGA’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

Rahm shot a 7-under 65 to get to minus-12 through 54 holes, one shot ahead of Ryan Palmer. The 25-year-old Rahm is seeking his 11th professional victory and fourth on the PGA Tour.

Palmer followed Friday’s 62 with a 1-under 71 to lose the lead.

Rory McIlroy shares third place with Sung Kang, Harry Higgs and Cameron Champ at 9 under.

LPGA-GAINBRIDGE

Sagstrom maintains lead

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Madelene Sagstrom fired a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Raton.

Sagstrom birdied four of the first eight holes and birdied the par-4 15th in a bogey-free round that puts her in position to claim her first LPGA title. The 27-year-old Swede is 15 under for the tournament.

Nasa Hataoka of Japan was second after 67.

FIGURE SKATING-US CHAMPIONSHIPS

Chen dazzles in short program

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Nathan Chen has a massive lead following the short program at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The full-time college student set a personal best with 114.13 points, putting Chen on target to become the first man to win four consecutive U.S. titles since Brian Boitano from 1985-88. Chen is more than 13 points ahead of second-place Jason Brown, taking much of the drama out of Sunday’s free program.
