MARIAH CAREY ADDED TO SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME

NEW YORK (AP) — From the start of her career, Mariah Carey has been known as an incredible singer. Now, she is getting credit for something fewer people have recognized her for: her songwriting. She is being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Carey has logged 19 No. 1 hits, including “Hero,” and “One Sweet Day” — and has co-written all but one. The only one of her hits she didn’t have a hand in writing was “I’ll Be There,” the old Jackson 5 hit.

SONGWRITERS HALL OF FAME ADDS MORE NEW MEMBERS

NEW YORK (AP) — Mariah Carey isn’t the only songwriter being ushered into the Songwriters Hall of Fame this year. Joining her are the Neptunes — the combo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo — and another pair of songwriters, former Eurythmics members Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. Another group, The Isley Brothers will be in the 2020 class as are Steve Miller, Rick Nowels and William “Mickey” Stephenson. The induction ceremony is set for June 11 in New York.

DEMI LOVATO TO SING ANTHEM AT SUPER BOWL

NEW YORK (AP) — It’s a huge bounce-back event for Demi Lovato. The pop singer has been named to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Lovato has been laying low since focusing on her recovery — after reports that she overdosed in July of 2018. She has struggled over the years with drugs, alcohol self-mutilation and eating disorder. The Super Bowl is Feb. 2 in Miami. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will do the halftime show.

JOURNALISTS MIFFED BY IMPEACHMENT COVERAGE LIMITS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Even some lawmakers are expressing concern about the limits being set for journalists covering the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. Reporters are being told they will be herded into a designated area — and won’t be able to chat up senators in the halls or in common interview spots like the elevators or the entrance to the Senate subway. At least two senators — one from each party — said the rules are designed to limit coverage of the proceedings.

WARREN / SANDERS POST-DEBATE DUSTUP CAUGHT ON TAPE

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lordy, there WERE tapes. When Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders got into a little verbal tussle after Tuesday’s presidential debate, everyone wondered what they were saying — especially when the video indicated Warren spurned Sanders’ attempt to shake hands. Now, we know what they said. CNN, which televised the debate, found some back-channel audio of the convo — during which Warren said Sanders called her “a liar on national TV.” The dustup comes after Warren asserted that Sanders once told her in a private conversation that a woman could never be elected president in the U.S.

STEPHEN KING ON DIVERSITY

NEW YORK (AP) — Ava DuVernay says she is a fan of Stephen King. But the director says she is no fan of what the best-selling author has said about diversity in Hollywood. Amid the debate over the latest batch of Oscar nominees, King tweeted that he cares only about “quality,” not “diversity.” DuVernay and others have noted King’s tweet suggests the two are mutually exclusive. His comments are especially irksome, since he is among those who voted for Oscar nominees.

MORE TALK ABOUT “FRIENDS” REUNION

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — The idea of cobbling together a “Friends” reunion is kinda like the weather: everybody seems to talk about it but no one actually does anything about it. The latest talk on the subject comes from the chief content officer of HBO Max. Kevin Reilly says the main stakeholders are interested in a reunion project — but right now, it hasn’t progressed beyond the “maybe” stage. Recently reports say HBO Max may do a “Friends” special.

KEN JENNINGS RULES OUT “JEOPARDY!” GREATEST REMATCH

NEW YORK (AP) — He went from “all in” to “I’m out.” Ken Jennings says don’t count him in if there’s another of those “Jeopardy!” all-time champions faceoffs. He won the tournament — but says he doesn’t think he’s up for a rematch. On Tuesday, TV viewers saw him capture the show’s “Greatest of all Time” competition by being the first to win three matches. He earned $1 million for his efforts.
