EVERYWHERE LAKES ARE FROZEN — The image of playing hockey on a frozen-over lake with an old pair of ice skates is steeped in both nostalgia and cliches.
There’s childish magic and innocence to amateurish outdoor hockey, and I’ve heard that it’s a staple memory of colder seasons to the kids who grew up playing. And even if you’ve never had the opportunity, depictions of lakeside skating are printed across holiday decorations and children’s books enough to evoke a sense of familiarity.
What you might have missed in these facsimiles of outdoor skating, however, is the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding landscape. These striking videos are sure to brighten your day:

The skaters, with their graceful movements, playful tricks, and stark white trails are only one part of what makes these videos fantastic.
Look at the deep, glassy shades of blue shrouding the surface, and the distant water and rocks beneath it. The far-off treelines and snowcapped mountains are picturesque enough for a nature documentary even without their gorgeous reflections across the lakes!
Nostalgia and cliches aside, winter wonderlands are alive and well in frozen lake top hockey.
