SPRINGVILLE — A major car crash shut down five lanes of traffic on southbound I-15 in Utah County on Thursday, just before rush hour.
The crash occurred about 4:10 p.m. after a ride-share driver cut across traffic to pick up their rider on the opposite side of the highway, Utah Department of Public Safety officials said in a news release.
The ride-share driver was there to pick up a truck’s occupants who had run out of gas and pulled over on the left shoulder.
While the ride-share car drove across lanes, it was hit by a pickup truck in the HOV lane, causing the car to roll and land on its roof in one lane. A semitruck with one box trailer slowed down suddenly in that same lane and was rear-ended by a different semitruck hauling two dump-trailers. To avoid the crash, a second pickup truck swerved and hit one of the dump trailers.
The ride-share driver suffered minor injuries. No one else was injured.
The chain-reaction crash initially closed five lanes, but two lanes had been reopened as of 5:30 p.m., according to the Utah Department of Transportation. UDOT estimated the highway would be cleared by 6 p.m.
