SALT LAKE CITY — An unlicensed driver who allegedly fled on foot from a fatal car crash will face a felony charge of leaving the scene.
Mario Alberto Sosa, 37, of West Valley City, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a third-degree felony; having no driver’s license and driving on the wrong side of the road, both infractions.
Just after midnight on Sunday, an Isuzu Rodeo crossed into oncoming traffic near 3200 West and 3600 South and hit a Nissan Altima head-on, according to charging documents.
Yesenia Raquel Castro, 30, was killed. The driver of the Rodeo ran away from the crash just as police arrived, the charges state.
Police found documents inside the wrecked car identifying Sosa. Investigators then talked to Sosa’s girlfriend, who said Sosa left in his SUV earlier in the evening and returned without it, according to charging documents.
“Sosa subsequently told (her) that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, was in a head-on collision, and fled the scene,” the charges state.
Sosa was arrested by West Valley police on Tuesday. Bail was set at $100,000.
