SANDY — An 18-year-old man died and another driver was injured in a car crash on Wednesday morning, police said.

The crash took place about 9:25 a.m. at 8830 S. State Street, according to Sandy Police Lt. Dean Carriger.

The 18-year-old was driving a Honda Fit south on State Street when the car drifted into the northbound lanes, Carriger said. The Honda struck an oncoming Volkswagen Passat head-on, according to Carriger.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Lincoln Wilks, of Draper, Carriger confirmed on Thursday.

The driver of the Passat was taken to a hospital with injuries, Carriger said. Further information about the Passat driver's injuries was not available as of Wednesday.

It is unknown why the Honda drifted into oncoming traffic, Carriger said. The crash was still being investigated.

Northbound lanes were closed for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.
