OREM — Police have arrested a third man in connection with a shooting that took place Aug. 29 at an Orem apartment complex.
Brayhan Maya, 18, was booked into the Utah County Jail on Tuesday afternoon for investigation of attempted homicide, child abuse, aggravated robbery, obstruction of justice and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, according to a jail report filed in Utah County.
Police say Maya was a passenger in a car that was sent to the Promenade Place Apartments, 875 S. Geneva Road in Orem, to rob a drug dealer on Aug. 29, according to the report.
The car, which police say also was occupied by a woman and her 2-year-old child, met a group of six people in a parking complex at the apartments. Maya and the woman were there to steal drugs from one of the men in the other group, according to the report.
A confrontation ensued when the two groups met and the woman sped off with Maya firing three or four shots back toward the second group, according to the report. One of the men in the second group, later identified as 23-year-old Nicholas James Jordan, then fired one or two shots back at the fleeing vehicle, the report states.
As of Wednesday, there was no indication that anyone was injured in the shooting, according to Orem Police Lt. Trent Colledge.
Police previously arrested Jordan and Cameron William Todhunder, 18, in connection with the robbery and shooting. Police do not anticipate making any other arrests in connection with the case, according to Colledge.
Todhunter allegedly was the “mastermind” behind the robbery, according to the jail report. He allegedly targeted one of the people in the second group for a robbery, and had robbed this same person in the past, according to the jail report.
He also allegedly used his girlfriend’s Snapchat account to “lure” the person into showing up for a drug transaction but planned to rob them of the drugs instead of buying them, the report states.
The woman driving the car was later determined to be Todhunter’s girlfriend, according to the report.
Since the person targeted for the robbery would have recognized Todhunter, he allegedly convinced the girlfriend to carry out the robbery in his place, along with Maya, the report states. Todhunter had the girlfriend dropped him off outside the parking complex before the robbery occurred, according to the report.
It’s not clear if Jordan was the person Todhunter allegedly targeted for the robbery or if the target was someone else. It is also not clear if the robbery was carried out or if the car fled the scene before it could take place.
After he was arrested, Todhunter admitted to investigators that he got the gun, which Maya allegedly later used in the shooting, at a party sometime before the shooting took place, according to the jail report.
Maya admitted to investigators that Todhunter gave him the handgun when Todhunter picked him up in Springville before the robbery, the report states. Maya also admitted that after the robbery, he and the girlfriend drove about a block away and he threw the gun out of the window and into some tall weeds, according to the report.
Maya told investigators that he felt the people in the group of six had “disrespected” him, in part because they approached the car and opened the back door, where the 2-year-old was sitting in the back seat, the report states.
“When asked if he knew if he hit any of them, (Maya) commented that he didn't care if he did, that they had disrespected them,” the report states.
Todhunter, of Spanish Fork, was charged Tuesday in 4th District Court in Utah County with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a second-degree felony; rioting, a third-degree felony; and reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor.
Jordan, of Orem, was charged Tuesday with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, and obstructing justice, second-degree felonies; drug distribution, and rioting, third-degree felonies.
Maya has not yet been formally charged, court records show.
