SALT LAKE CITY — Police investigated a possible suspicious package near 280 E. 600 South in Salt Lake City Wednesday that was later deemed safe by police.

The call reporting the package came in early Wednesday afternoon. Roads in the area were closed but later reopened about 4:30 p.m., police said.

The Valley Behavioral Health building at 280 E. 600 South was evacuated, according to Salt Lake Police Det. Michael Ruff. Another building adjacent to Valley Behavioral Health, at 303 E. 600 South, was also evacuated, he said. Evacuations were lifted about 4:40 p.m., according to police.

A container of some sort was left outside the building, Ruff said.

Utah Transit Authority buses and Valley Behavioral Health vans were used to accommodate people who were evacuated to get them out of the heat, Ruff said.

There was briefly some concern that some of the people who should have evacuated were still in the building, but as of 3 p.m. everyone had been accounted for, Ruff said.

Police said the package was rendered safe but an investigation into it was ongoing.

This is the second report of a suspicious package in as many days in Salt Lake City.

On Tuesday, a package was found near the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah office, 355 N. 300 West. Roads were shut down in the area for several hours, but the package was ultimately determined to be a stack of papers.
