MILLCREEK — A pedestrian and bike collision in Millcreek Canyon on Sunday sent one woman to the hospital, officials said.
The accident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at 4996 E Millcreek Canyon Road. A 55-year-old woman was running down the canyon and saw a male bicyclist behind her, according to Unified police detective Ken Hansen. She anticipated him passing her on the right, so she went left; he anticipated her passing her on the left, so he went right, thus colliding with the runner, Hansen said.
The woman sustained a head injury and was transported to a hospital, Hansen said. The woman's condition is currently unknown, Hansen said, and the cyclist did not sustain any injuries.
"This was initially called in as a car vs. biker," Hansen said. "But it's actually a biker vs. ped."
Unified Fire spokesman Ryan Love said the area of the crash is a popular road for cyclists during the weekends, but also a frequent site of accidents. He confirmed that in the same location, a Unified fighter was struck by a car and sustained minor injuries while responding to a call in June.
“Our state offers endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, including biking in our canyons," Love added. "Millcreek Canyon is an excellent canyon and beautiful ride for both motorists and bicyclists. During times of increased usage, we’d like to remind those traveling through to be mindful of those recreating, likewise those recreating to practice safety in maintaining awareness.”
Editor’s note: Unified fire officials originally said a man was transported to a hospital after a bike vs. car collision. Unified police later clarified that it was in fact bike vs. pedestrian incident involving both a man and a woman. This article has been updated to reflect the new information given.
