SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man who was attending school in Fairbanks, Alaska, died this week after falling while rock climbing in Denali National Park, officials confirmed.

Evan Millsap, 26, died late Tuesday evening after falling in Igloo Canyon in the northeast section of the park, according to a news release from park officials.

Millsap and a friend were climbing about 10:30 p.m. when part of their rope system failed as Millsap tried to rappel down the rock face, according to the release. He fell about 70 feet, the release states.

Millsap’s partner climbed down the ridge and went to a nearby campground to seek help. Rescue personnel reached the site where Millsap fell about 1:15 a.m. and pronounced him dead at the scene from traumatic injuries.

Denali National Park spokeswoman Maureen Gualtieri confirmed that Millsap is from Utah and was attending school in Fairbanks.
