HEBER CITY — A 6-year-old girl suffered injuries after being dragged behind a school bus on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

About 3:45 p.m., a Wasatch County School District bus was eastbound on U.S. Highway 40 dropping off students at the Potter Lane intersection, northwest of Heber City, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street.

The girl’s backpack got stuck on part of the bus, possibly the wheel, Street said. When the bus started moving, the girl was dragged 10-15 feet before the bus stopped again, he said.

The girl, a student at J.R. Smith Elementary School, was taken to Heber Valley Medical Center in an ambulance, Street said.

The girl's injuries are not considered life-threatening, Wasatch County School District Spokeswoman Kirsta Albert said in an emailed statement.

As of 10 p.m., the girl was recovering at home with some scrapes and bruises on her head, arm and leg.

The bus driver has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated, Albert said.

"The safety and well-being of our 7,000 students is the number one priority of Wasatch County School District," Albert said. "Our thoughts are with the student and her family."
