SALT LAKE CITY — A pair of hikers reported missing in Garfield County have been found safe, the Garfield County Sheriff said Tuesday morning.
The man and woman, reported to be in their 20s, dropped their car off Sunday at a trailhead and were hiking from the Death Hollow area north of Escalante back to their car, according to Garfield County Sheriff's Spokeswoman Denise Dastrup.
The woman's parents reported the pair overdue from the Salt Lake area about noon Monday after they failed to return home when expected, Dastrup said. They were found about 10:45 p.m. Monday, she said.
The two had been out since April 7 and planned to hike back to their car, but got lost and ended up on the wrong trail, Dastrup said. They planned to turn around, but the woman said she didn't feel well, so they stopped, Dastrup said.
The pair, who are experienced hikers from Midvale, had packed supplies to build a fire, Dastrup said. A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter saw the fire while searching the area and found the two, Dastrup added.
She did not identify the hikers, but said they will be OK.
