SYRACUSE — Chalk it up to a misunderstanding.
It turns out two people who were knocking on doors, offering Terminix services and taking debit card information worked for a contracted company through Terminix were not a part of a scam, Syracuse police said.
“Ultimately, this was not a scam or fraud, but rather a data entry timing issue between the contracted company and Terminix,” police wrote in an updated Facebook post.
That came after a Facebook post from the department on Tuesday, which warned of a possible scam involving two people posing as employees of the pest control service and collecting information.
Syracuse police detective Erin Behm said police were alerted by a resident who had come across the two people and gave his debit card information.
A spokesperson for Terminix told KSL.com that Salt Lake City Terminix branch employees salespeople do go door to door and offer pest control services, book appointment and accept payment for those services.
She added it can take a few hours from the time those teams collect that data and it being added to the company’s customer database, and it appears — in this case — the resident called during that lag time. The company was working to resolve the issue with that resident, the company added.
