SANDY — Two men are in critical condition after a two-vehicle crash that caused one of the cars to go "airborne" and then catch fire, officials report.
Shortly before 2 p.m., a white car was heading north on State Street, and as it went through the intersection at 8000 South, it crashed into a southbound black passenger car that was turning left onto 8000 South, according to Unified police detective Kevin Mallory.
The white car then went "airborne and rolled in the air" before landing and catching fire. The driver was ejected from the car when it landed, Mallory said.
Both the driver of the white car and the driver of the black car were taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Both men were the only occupants in each car, Mallory confirmed.
Northbound State Street and both directions of 8000 South in the area were temporarily closed as a crash analysis and reconstruction team investigated the accident. Both roads were reopened by 6 p.m.
Witnesses told police they saw the white car traveling at "excessively high speeds," Mallory said.
"We're investigating speed as a contributing factor, and we're also investigating possible impairment," he said.
