WEST VALLEY CITY — A party in West Valley City turned sour Saturday night as two men engaged in an argument that ended with a shooting, West Valley City police said.
Officers responded to 6349 W. Meander Ave in West Valley City at 1:48 a.m. Sunday morning on a call about a shooting. Sgt. John Pittman said the two men involved had gotten into an argument and Jason Hare, 41, shot a 38-year-old man who was later identified as Llewellyn Auvaa.
Witnesses told officers Hare was arguing with Auvaa right before the shooting, according to a jail report. Police found bullet casings and said Hare had blood spatter on his pants "consistent with being in close proximity to a shooting victim," the report states.
Hare denied shooting Auvaa and originally gave police the wrong last name and date of birth "because he was scared of his warrants."

Auvaa, who was in serious but stable condition, was transported to a local hospital where he was expected to undergo surgery, the report states.
Hare was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail under investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, among other offense.
Police said they do not know if the shooting was gang-related.
