THE HALL — It's always been a struggle of mine to understand what does and does not scare children.
For example, my 5-year-old son loves all of the "Indiana Jones" movies. They don't scare him, not even when a man's beating heart is ripped from his chest and he is lowered to a slow and painful death in a pit of lava.
But do you know what does scare him? The new "Beauty and the Beast." And it's not the beast that scares him, it's Gaston. I don't get it, but the fear is real to him.
This 11-month-old girl has a similar thing going on. She's terrified of a vacuum but not at all frightened of a dog that looks like a wolf.
This dad caught on video his little girl running from the vacuum and taking shelter in the coat of her beloved husky dog. I understand why the girl isn't scared of the dog, because the animal is clearly a good dog.
Yesterday's Have You Seen This?
What is funny, however, is that the vacuum terrifies her. But the loud noise and design of the household appliance does seem to scare most kids. My oldest daughter used to scream and run to her room whenever we cleaned our floor. So, I get it. It's actually pretty clear and should now just become a universal truth:
Dogs = Amazing
Vacuum = Super scary stuff
Now that I've adopted this mantra, kids' fears make sense to me and the world just got a little less crazy.
