SOUTH SALT LAKE — A 24-year-old man was arrested after police say he fatally stabbed his girlfriend early Tuesday morning.

Angelo Terry Kirstine was arrested and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of murder, according to jail records.

Police received a call of a fatal stabbing about 1 a.m. and responded to the Eight20 Apartments, 820 W. Timbercreek Way (about 4000 South), South Salt Lake detective Gary Keller said. He added Kirstine's grandfather found the 26-year-old woman dead in the apartment with a stab wound to the neck.

The woman's name was not immediately released.

Keller said Kirstine lived in the apartment with his family. He wasn't sure if the girlfriend lived there too.

According to a police affidavit filed in 3rd District Court, Kirstine had requested a ride to a relative’s home from the apartment about 12:40 a.m. Keller said Kirstine asked to go the University of Utah Hospital where he told staff he had hurt someone.

The university called police and Kirstine was taken into custody, he said.

Police observed blood on Kirstine’s shoes and clothing at the time of his arrest, according to the affidavit.

“(Kirstine) had what appeared to have fresh scratch marks on his torso. It appeared (Kirstine) had been involved in a recent physical confrontation,” the report stated.

Police learned that Kirstine had suffered from “mental health-related disorders and had violent tendencies as a result of those mental health-related issues,” the affidavit added.

Court records show Kirstine has a criminal history in Utah. In 2013, he pleaded guilty in two separate cases to robbery, a second-degree felony. Records show he was sentenced to serve at least one year in Utah State Prison in the case.

Records also show a person filed a protective order against Kirstine in September 2018. Details of why the protective order was filed weren't available in the state court system.
