OGDEN — An Ogden attorney who admitted to bringing drugs into a Utah jail has been ordered to spend four months behind bars.
A tearful Tony Miles, 55, told a judge Wednesday that he never dreamed he would become an addict but developed a painkiller problem following a hand injury, the Standard-Examiner reported.
Third District Judge Jennifer Valencia ordered Miles to serve a heftier sentence than the 60 days prosecutors sought, saying he previously manipulated the system to get out of jail early and has two other drug-related convictions, according to the newspaper.
Miles pleaded guilty in October to two counts of possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility, a third-degree felony. He admitted he tried to smuggle drugs into the Weber County Jail in April 2017, court documents show. He brought a contact lens case containing cocaine and heroin into the building, according to the charges, and also allegedly used a fake name to enter the jail and meet with two inmates.
On Wednesday, he received identical terms of 120 days in jail in two other drug possession cases from 2017 and 2018, but the judge allowed them all to run at the same time. Miles said he hopes he can someday regain his now-suspended law license and wants to help others who are fighting addiction.
He is scheduled to appear in court March 27 for a possible transfer to drug court, which seeks to balance penalties with treatment for offenders.
