SALT LAKE CITY — Layton police say the investigation into a fatal auto-pedestrian crash in December isn't over, even though a charge filed shortly after the incident was dismissed.

On Dec. 18, a 63-year-old man was hit while crossing the road, not in a crosswalk, near 450 N. Main Street. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Layton police identified the man this week as David Begay, who was transient at the time of his death. They have been unable to locate his next of kin.

Following the crash, a 30-year-old Murray man was originally charged in Layton Justice Court with driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to court documents. That case was dismissed on Jan. 3, court records state.

But according to a search warrant filed in 2nd District Court, Layton police are now focusing their investigation on other items found in the man's car.

"During the course of the on-scene investigation a firearm was located in the vehicle, the driver admitted to taking a controlled substance without a prescription and vials of testosterone and syringes were located in the vehicle. Upon examination by a certified (officer) the driver also displayed signs of impairment," the warrant states.

Another item found in the car, according to a return to the warrant, was simply listed as "wine not in original container."

According to court records, the man has an extensive history of traffic violations, including driving on a suspended or revoked license. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to five days in jail for failing to comply with the conditions of his probation on a prior conviction of going 110 mph in a 70 mph zone on a motorcycle in March 2018.

Correction: An earlier version reported charges were filed in the case of a 34-year-old man who was hit and killed at 1650 N. Hill Field Road on Dec. 18. The case actually involves a 63-year-old man killed in a separate accident at 450 N. Main Street on the same date.
