SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Division of Wildlife Resources officials are asking for the public’s help in finding those responsible for illegally killing a moose and two elk in separate poaching cases.
The first poaching case occurred on Nov. 5 near the Little Dell Reservoir in East Canyon. A witness reported seeing a male stalk and then shoot a bull moose broadside with a compound bow from about 20 yards away, according to wildlife officials. The moose walked a short distance before dying from its wounds.
The witness reported the incident to wildlife conservation officers and described the male, who disappeared into nearby foliage, as wearing “older, military-style camouflage clothing” and a camouflage, boonie-style hat.
The second poaching was reported on Dec. 1 after a citizen discovered an elk that had been shot and left near Seep Ridge Road in the Book Cliffs, south of Vernal, officials said. Upon further investigation, conservation officers discovered two elk had been killed, but only one had been taken from the scene. Officials did not specify how the elk were killed, but they believed both died between Nov. 28-30.
Anyone with information about any of these illegal killings can call the UTip hotline at 1-800-662-3337, or email the information to toturninapoacher@utah.gov. Rewards are often available for information leading to the successful prosecution of wildlife crimes, and tipsters can remain anonymous.
