DRAPER — Investigators still aren't sure why a man fled from police trying to pull him over for a traffic violation or what caused him to crash in a hotel parking lot Friday night.

Cody Watkins, 31, was killed in the crash, Draper Police Sgt. Scott Adams said Monday.

Police attempted to pull over Watkins near 13200 South and Minuteman Drive for a traffic violation about 11 p.m. An officer flashed their squad car lights, but the driver of the pickup truck sped away, Adams said.

The officer decided not to pursue the vehicle, and police received a report of a crash at a Ramada Inn, located at 12650 S. Minuteman Drive, shortly after, according to Draper Police Sgt. Clint Fackrell. Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
