WEST VALLEY CITY — A field fire burned a shed and melted plastic fences and siding on several homes in West Valley City Thursday afternoon, officials said.

A battalion chief with the Unified Fire Authority was driving near 2600 S. 7100 West when he saw smoke coming from a grass fire in a nearby field about noon, according to West Valley City Fire battalion chief Jeff Fox.

The UFA battalion chief quickly alerted local fire authorities who came and put out the fire, Fox said. The fire burned a shed and melted some plastic fences and siding on some homes, but no one was injured.

Ten homes were evacuated during the fire because firefighters were unsure which direction the blaze would burn, Fox said. Luckily, the wind was on their side, he added.

Fox also noted it was lucky that the UFA battalion chief was able to spot the fire when he did.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation.
